Mass Effect Achievements - How they help!

Normally, going for all achievements in a 360 game earns Mavrixx mocking. Gamerscores are for epeens. However, the folks at bioware made the achievements in mass effect actually MEAN something.

Trek Online - Doomed?

Well...this could be bad. Perpetual, the development house tasked with making the big leap for Star Trek into the MMO world has been purchased by a "media company" looking to break into the video game market. Not the way a big franchise like Trek should be pushed into the world. Not only is the big management change a shocker, but apparently they are looking to drive it more towards a micro transaction model instead of subscription fees in hopes that it will draw a more casual crowd.

Sorry, there isnt jack shit thats casual about Trek fans....except their "Enterprise" watching habits.

I smell bad things. Maybe the death of this IP?

Our UAV is Online!

I don't want to be too premature though seeing as how Drake, Mass Effect, and Mario Galaxy are still ahead of me, but thus far....

Call of Duty 4 is my game of the year. I'm still playing it, I'm still enjoying it. I love it. Buy it. Now. Any console or the PC will do. Just go.

Level 52. When I switch to prestige, I'll get started on those other games. So good. I knew it would be when I got a taste of the beta, but it as exceeded all expectations. So excellent.

Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review

TRIFECTA OF MAV REVIEWS! REVIEW ONE!

So, not to be outdone by Bloodwall, here is my CoD 4 Review. Its a bit late in coming, but any of you console/pc gamers out there know that the past few weeks has been INSANE for game releases. Add thanksgiving on top of it all....BUSY. Anywho, here it is.

Gameplay: Having only played SOME of CoD 3 before picking up CoD 4, i wasnt overly familiar with the control scheme. Id say i was comfortable, but it wasnt 2nd nature. I got the 2nd nature ingrained in my head while playing in the MP beta, then appropriately lost it all by playing halo 3. The gameplay for CoD can be broken into a few different areas. COntrols are solid. Smooth, easy to understand and a shallow learning curve. Mission flow is kind of jumpy at points. I wont say that it is poorly designed, it just doesnt flow that well. You basically play 2-3 different characters(counting some of the bit parts) but focus on a new SAS recruit and a Force Recon Marine. No spoilers in the review, but you jump back and forth between the 2 at different points in the campaign, and it can get somewhat confusing depending on how close you pay attention to the dialogue. The first most interesting mission would have to be the Gillie suit mission where you have to use stealth and sniping to infililtrate and enemy position. Coming in a close second is the AC-130 mission as a gunner where you are covering the character you were just playing on the ground and helping the team escape. It seems very lifelike and real, done in simulated IR black and white. Very classy. Otherwise, great mechanics, almost exactly like CoD 3 mechanics.

Graphics: While CoD 4 suffers from the same bad press that Halo did regarding its resolution, since it is not running at 1080 or even 720p, but the way that Infinity Ward coded the game made sure that it looks great and runs at a consistant FPS. Some lighting is kind of wonky, and some of the physics can get pretty wierd, otherwise, its the most photorealistic FPS ive ever played. Detail is amazing, weaponry looks great and the little details make this game great.

Audio: Great dolby surround mix. Not a single complaint.

Replayability(is that even a word?): The ability to have a semi RPG component in multiplayer for this game is amazing. Gaining levels/ranks that give you new weapons and perks makes the multiplayer experience more like another kind of game. However, once you come down to it all...its still just running around and shooting. I couldnt ever get into another kind of game besides team deathmatch, but those might be interesting to try. COD4 is close to the top MP game on XBL right now, and its easy to see why. Great design, the graphical reduction is so minimal its not even funny. All in all great replayability.

Overal score: 6 out of 8 intel briefcases.

I would have liked to see a longer single player campaign...5 hours is pretty lame. Otherwise, serious GOTY candidate.

Who You Gonna Call?

A new Ghostbusters game is on the horizon...but its not just a game.

From this months GameInformer magazine:

Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are getting back together to make a sequel to Ghostbusters 1 and 2 – in video-game form, and we’ve got the first details. The three are teaming up for scriptwriting and voice and are going far beyond just the typical licensed add-your-voice-to-the-game-you-had-nothing-to-do-with formula.

Incredible. Cant wait to see it.

Counter-Strike? More Like Boring-Strike!

The last time I played Counter-Strike was when Source first came out back in 2004 and the new coat of paint made the game fun again for a time. Before then, back in 1998-2001, I used to play that game almost religiously. Nothing could beat the 16x16 matches on DE_Dust. Nothing. No other game existed. It was... so good.

Headshots, leg shots, grenades, flashbangs, weapons, bunny hopping, knife kills, AWP... all great things. New physics model, new looks - game was on its way to back greatness. Then I stopped playing and never looked back... until last night. Friend of mine prompted me to play a game of CS:Source and I indulged him. That luster that I remember, all the things I loved... That was then and this is now.

Now it's crap. I can count all the faults and list them off one by one, but I'd run out of toes and fingers and you, you readership of 1 or 2, would run out of patience. Gaming needs to evolve. I wouldn't say I'm more sophisticated now after all these years, but I'd definitely agree that my tastes have changed and I do require a little bit more when it comes to playing games. With that said, my next statement might sound just a little hypocritical...

Call of Duty 4 is the next Counter-Strike. It has everything I once loved about CS and enough tweaks that makes it feel original and great that I appreciate. Grenades in CoD4 actually kill people. I can't tell you how frustrating it was to toss a grenade at someone's feet in CS and have it only do 50 damage. Headshots aren't anywhere NEAR as random. As great as headshots are, the frequency they are dished in CS is pretty ridiculous. No hacking - although it can't be proven that it doesn't exist on consoles, I know for a fact it exists in CS on PC's and it's rampant and almost exhaustive.

The funny part is, CoD4 is also being called a step backward in game design as it's a straight up basic shooter without lean, cover, or any of the neat abilities adorning many modern-day FPS titles. Interesting still, I never hear anyone levy these same complaints against games such as Team Fortress 2 or Half-Life. I think some gamers are just spoiled and want to win without taking any risk. Risk is part of the game if you want to sit in that chair.

Anyways, enough of this. Back to CoD4.

Shooter Burnout

I need a non shooter game. Im so burned out on FPS or TPS.

Mass Effect? RPG...but still a shooter.
Lego Star Wars? Hmm...
AC6 - Essentially a shooter.
Assassins Creed - Like a shooter, except with stabbing.

I need something to pull me out of my gaming funk.

Havent played Lego Star Wars, but its on my "Must Buy" list for this week/my vacation next week. Add in lego Indiana Jones, and these guys look to be doing some awesome stuff.

Nothing Would Make Me Happier

Only downside to this is the immature 10 year old assbags Bloodwall and i had to deal with this weekend on XBL. However, id love to see a WELL CONSTRUCTED, DEEPLY INTERESTING game beat the pants off of the overhyped halo 3.

Waste of Space

New Downloadable Content (DLC) is available on Xbox Live for Guitar Hero III:

http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/11/08/in-game-content-Guitar-Hero-III.aspx

Content: Foo Fighters Pack
Price: 500 Microsoft Points
Availability: All Xbox LIVE regions
Dash Text: [ESRB: T (Teen) MILD LYRICS,MILD SUGGESTIVE THEMES] "The Pretender" Off of the "Echoes Silence Patience & Grace", "All My life" Off of the "One by One", & "This Is A Call" Off of the "Foo Fighters (self titled)" as performed by Foo Fighters. For all song credits please visit www.redoctane.com There are no refunds for this item. For more information, see www.xbox.com/live/accounts.

I don't even own Guitar Hero III (I own II), but owning the game to be able to play "The Pretender" is enticing to me. I love that song and playing it on the all new wireless fisher price guitar would be good times. However, the game is 90 bucks (wut) or 60 without the guitar and the DLC is 500 points or $6.50.

Not a big deal really except for the fact that I wouldn't play the other two songs at all. I'd be spending 500 points just for The Pretender and I just can't justify that cost. Why can't they just license out a band's library and allow the users to pick and choose songs they want? I'd grab Hero, Everlong, and The Pretender and pay the already absurd price for those three songs. I can't, however, do it for one song and 2 mediocre ones I don't care about.

Music is EXTREMELY subjective so I'll stay away from too many opinions regarding that, but the price for gaming is ridiculous. Rock Band will not be in my house any time soon at 170 bucks a box. I love gaming, I even posted the lengths I go to to play games quickly, but like fine wine, I can't stock a cellar of the finest and rarest. I might have one cherished expensive bottle, but I can't justify owning a second. Sorry music games, you're fun, but I'm going to have to block you.

Gimmicks I Hate: Part 1

So, apparently its the new gimmick to put hidden content after the credits for games and movies.

Now...im not averse to watching the credits, hell, ive grown up with my dad waiting through ALL the credits at every movie we go to. I wonder to myself...is he looking for someone he knows? At any rate, I think everyone who works hard should have their name put on their products. Especially when it is great intellectual property such as music, games and TV/Movies. However, forcing consumers to watch your credits in order to partake in all the content there is to offer is becoming old.

When halo 3 did it, i chuckled. Such as the first time i saw fast and the furious or X men 3 and stayed through the credits. Sure, a little gem here or there to further the story. But after beating Call of Duty 4 last night i felt a bit of accomplishment. I felt like i did really well with the content.

Today, i was reading some reviews and found out that there is a "hidden mission" if you watch through the credits. While i think IW did a great job with the game, this rubs me the wrong way. If there is a mission in the game thats an epilogue, then frigging put it as an epilogue, not a hidden mission people only can play after stroking your ego.

Maybe im just in a shit mood today, but man. This really irritated me. I have a buddy who worked on Gears of War, and i watched the credits to see him and see his name cause i know him. Watching credits of people i dont know and a listing of names that mean nothing to me....sorry guys. I appreciate your work, but dont make me read your name like its high school graduation.

Read this today from "Gaming Today"

Microsoft Corp., The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and Super Bowl Champion Jerry Rice joined forces today to introduce new parental tools as part of the second year of the “Safety is no game. Is your family set?” campaign. The tools include a “PACT”a family contract between parents and children intended to encourage family discussion about screen time guidelines and the new Family Timer feature for the Xbox 360. The Family Timer feature will allow parents to regulate the amount of gaming and entertainment time allotted for their kids, on a daily or weekly basis.

Parental Responsibility. Win.
No governmental interruption declaring what parents should do. Win.
Washed up sports star pimping it. Win.
Ironically stupid Microsoft PR image included. Win.
Feeling that no parents will use this? Lose.

I hope there is a way to hack this so i can make all the idiotic kids playing on XBL either shut up or be locked out of their system. ONOZ. HIDE UR EYEZ FROM LEZBIAN MASS EFFECT LOVEMAKING!

The Kitchen Sink

The news has not been lacking, I've just been lazy. Lets get rolling with the updates...

Naruto: Rise of a Ninja

I started playing this one Sunday morning and plowed through about 6 hours of gameplay. I can't say I was enjoying myself too much, but there is definitely some merit to the title. The graphics and sound for example (not including the English dub, which isn't as bad as the AC6 dub surprisingly) are two of its finer qualities. It captures the essence of Naruto as well and manages to combine elements from the anime into a passable fighting/action/adventure game. It's an impressive effort as far as licensed games go. Despite that though, the game is loaded with fail.

For starters, there's a game breaking glitch that completely killed my game roughly one hour from completion and it has affected quite a few people on message boards and such. Who knows how many who don't use message boards have encountered this error, but it's enough to really piss you off. I remember a day when console gaming was the last bastion of complete software. Console games were meticulously tested for bugs and errors because if one was found, there was no quick fix. Only option was to replace the whole lot shipped and that's just completely unacceptable financially for a company. Nowadays, with patching, ship it now, collect cash, fix it later. Some people think this is fine with the advent of downloadable content, but I do not.

So, in vein of Naruto and his pension for sloshing down gobs of Ramen, I rate it based on empty Ramen boxes and give it...

1/10.

Fix your games Ubisoft. Seriously. Sick of your crap.

Logitech is Amazing

I've touted the praises for Logitech for years now and they have reaffirmed my faith in them once again. My G5 gaming mouse started to perform under specification and I wanted a new one. Called up Logitech, told them my issue and they shipped me a brand new G5 mouse in retail packaging. Not only did they ship it to me at no cost to myself, they also upgraded me to their latest G5 model which includes additional buttons and even better sensitivity.

If you have a Logitech product and find it's underwhelming performance wise be it battery life or functionality, give em a call. Number is on their website. If it's in the three year warranty, they'll hook you up. Great company.

Call of Duty 4 = WOW

As Mavrixx said yesterday, I have been playing Call of Duty 4 quite a bit. I'm not quite done with the single player campaign (though I know I am extremely close), but I just wanted to say it is wow. If wow could be quantified in some tangible source, say, as 5 tons of licorice red rope candy per WOW, Call of Duty 4 is worth 10 WOW's or 50 tons of licorice red rope candy.

I definitely do have some issues with the game, but I'll save that for my final review. I want to finish it on the next hardest difficulty and play some multiplayer before committing to anything final.

Are You Game Enough?!

I remember a few years ago when Blockbuster or some company was trying to push videogame rental passes or some such onto people and used the title tag line, "Are you game enough?!" for its ad campaign. When I think of hardcore gamers, or people who claim to be just that, it always goes back to that person doing the ad who was this portly fellow in a headband, wearing a basketball jersey, wristbands, and jumping around like an idiot as if this was some symbol for gaming culture. A fat guy in a jersey. It wasn't there, it isn't today.

However, hardcore gamers are indeed a rare breed. You can find plenty if you search for videogame forums on the web, but finding them in public or identifying them on the street based on their apparel isn't exactly easy. I don't consider myself hardcore, but even gaming journalists who play this stuff for a living, look like me at work - jeans, polo, unrelated to gaming t-shirt, etc and we'd be nigh indistinguishable from the non-gamer variety. Our actions do speak louder than words.

I remember a few years ago... I guess it was 1997 or thereabouts... wow, 10 years ago. I'm old. Anyways, Final Fantasy VII was on the cusp of its US release. It was my most hotly anticipated title at the time and it was something I looked forward to with great relish and enthusiasm. I had played the demo dozens of times and could not wait to get my grubby mitts on the final game. I even re-ordered the game before it came out, something that was actually pretty new back then and not shoved down your throat like it is now.

On the day of its release, I got out of High School and took the Samtrans Bus down at my local Electronics Boutique (which is now owned by Gamestop) at the nearby mall known as Tanforan. Picked up my copy and ran home, non stop, which is about a mile from my house (this is after already running a mile in school during PE). When I got home, I tore the packaging off and marveled at the glorious white discs inside. Disk 1, disk 3, disk 3. ... Wait, what? 1, 3, and... 3... Huh. Maybe it's a typo I thought, but wanted to be sure and called the game store. They told me to bring it back and exchange it.

Dropping the phone on my bed, I put everything back in the case, closed it up, grabbed my receipt, and raced back to the store running the whole way. Now we're up to 3 miles of running on the day. The clerk looked it over and promptly gave me a replacement copy. I took that copy and ran home. 4 miles.

After my mini marathon, I grabbed a sprite, chugged it down, and played the entirety of disk one in one play through sleeping only one hour that night before school the next day. I never fell asleep in class though because I was too excited to get home and continue my play through. Two days later, the game was finished and I was content.

I was reminded of this story because on Monday night, I was told at least, I should have had my copy of CoD4 and yet Gamestop refused to sell it to me despite having it in stock. Lucky for me, the local Gamecrazy had plenty of copies and sold me one the day of and I found myself, yet again, traveling some distance for my habit. It wasn't the 4-mile marathon of old, I actually walked and listened to my iPod to and fro, but its still me going all out for my habit. Probably not as hardcore as the FFVII story, but the dedication is still there.

I know no one comments on these yet. Heck, there probably isn't many people who read this stuff as it is, but do you have any hardcore gaming stories? Any examples of your idiocy for your habit? A story you're too ashamed to tell a friend in real life, but wouldn't mind sharing with other dorks anonymously? Drop it in the comments. Good times for all.

That's it for this installment. I'll be back with a CoD4 review later this week.

Lets do dis.

Its out today. As you can see from his gamer tag, Bloodwall got it yesterday evening and played a bit. Ill be picking it up tonite after work and going apeshit through it. I loved the MP beta. Loved the PC demo. This game is going to own face.

Expect reviews later this week.

Halo 3 review - Thank God I Finished The Fight...or did I?

So, I've been waiting to do this review for a while. Sure, does it even matter if someone reviews Halo 3 now? hell, its over a month since the release, everyone and their mother has reviewed it and by now all the fanboys have played it and issued their thoughts.

All valid points.

One thing that makes this different from all other games is the sheer level of hype that was constructed. Halo, one of the bestselling games of all times...i can see where a sequel can garner some attention, but damn. I haven't seen this much hype since the Star Wars prequels were getting ready to be released. Ironically...this was handled much differently.

Now, to be truthful, i never played the campaign of Halo 1 or 2. All i know about the story is what i perused in a halo wikipedia before getting the game so i had SOME idea about what was going on. I had a feeling that this game was going to be akin to 24, coming in at the end never have played 1 or 2 except at lan parties with friends, i didn't want to be totally lost in the story. Ha. Well, at least i tried.

Also, in all fairness, i bought this game on release day, hoping to totally fall in love with it like all the mainstream review sites said i would. I played it for 20 min the first day, then shelved it until now because of work, TF2 and some personal life things. However, here i am.

Oh yeah, and spoilers. Lots of em.

Gameplay: Not much has changed between the gameplay of Halo 1, Halo 2 to now. The big addition was the inclusion of "equipment", such as auto turrets, cloaking devices and the much advertised bubble shield.

This is a new gameplay mechanic. Yep. A shield. Thats a bubble. Too bad this isnt an IG graphic, just an overhyped trailer CGI interpretation of how it should look in a good game.

The melee weapons that are in the game are interesting. The Gravity Hammer is fun, but seems to be kind of difficult to use effectively in the campaign. I found myself using the Covenant sword in the High Charity map alot more than the weapons in that level, for the sheer reason that ammo was so scarce. It consisted of running up, slamming the trigger and hoping you were lucky to hit. Interesting, but not real tactical. There are moments in the game where Cortana speaks to Master Chief in real ominous phrases and stop you from moving or doing anything. I thought it was an interesting gimmick, however, it got old after the 30th time it happened.

Cut it out. Srsly.

The new vehicles were definitely fun. The hornet missions were probably the most fun i had in the entire game. Add in the intriguing way of destroying the Covenant Scarab Tanks, and there are some real fun moments. Just when you thought killing the scarabs was getting kind of routine, they add in the ability to do it with aircraft. Very nice change. The best part of Halo will always be the vehicles in the game. The classic warthog fishtail, the Banshee strafing runs...lots of fun. In this aspect, Halo 3 delivered again. New vehicles, new ways to use them. I thought a Warthog race was a fitting end to the trilogy as the final level, especially with the final jump into the frigate. Very cool moment.

Let me show you my new hot ride. My new hot ride, let me show you it.

Graphics: Yeah. Graphics. As if THIS wasn't beaten to death in the mainstream gaming media. I play on a 42" plasma with my Xbox set at 1080P. Yes, my big gripe with this game has to be the visuals. Not that they are overwhelmingly terrible, because they aren't. Some areas of the game are stunning. Beaches, large panoramic visuals, etc. Very well done. However, when you get down to consistent detail, this game screws the family pooch. The issue of the game only running at 640p at inconsistent FPS rates is a HUGE issue. This game should be THE benchmark for 360 graphics capabilities. However, looking at blocky shadows, terrible character models(especially faces) and lighting that is damn near impossible to see details in some parts...inexcusable.

Good detail and lighting!

Lame detail, copypasta texture, pipecleaner trees and lame haze effect to keep FPS from dipping below 0!!!(Click to embiggen.)

The trailers, commercials and other films done to hype this game look better than the actual game. I'm not sure what the reason was for them going with the in game engine for cut scenes(*cough*cash*cough*) but it was a bad move. This game should have had amazing CGI cut scenes and equally amazing character detail, especially on the main characters. Also, is there a reason why the company who MADE direct x10 cant take the volumetric explosions/smoke to the console level? Seeing lines in explosions and in smoke is such a buzzkill. On the good side, all the vehicles, ships and weapons looked great. The bubble shield graphics were incredible. And to top it all off, the spartan suit looked as detailed as ever. Good thing he didn't have to show any facial expression behind the mask.

G4 put it really well "Admittedly, 80 pixels isn’t going to make much of a difference after it is upscaled to 720p by the Xbox 360, but it does seem there are more 'jaggies' than when compared to other titles that run naively at 720p."

Its true. Give me 1080p.

Audio: I played the game on a true 5.1 system running through a THX certified receiver over the digital out from the xbox. Should have the true audio representation coming out of the game. The audio mix, i thought, needed alot of work. Some of the background noises such as ship rumble, ambient environment noise, background chatter, etc overplayed critical dialogue with main characters in cut scenes. Surround was real hot, center was really quiet. Balance of music volume on default seemed to be very high over the dialogue and effects as well. Even after adjusting all these values and messing with my sound system settings, the balance was still off. The music, as usual, was one of the strongest points of the game. The ominous chorus singing always evokes the first time playing Halo multiplayer at a friends house in college and still to this day brings up images of a green suited marine in my head. Voice acting was superb. The talent that, of course, hidden, is very good. Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin all do great jobs in their respective roles. Its nice to see some Firefly/Serenity fans putting those guys to work in a sci fi setting again. Katee Stackhoff was also one of the soldier voices, also known as Starbuck from the new Battlestar Galactica, however, i didn't remember hearing her.

Replayability(is that even a word?):
I guess the big replayability features that are being stressed are going to be multiplayer and the search for skulls. While i find the idea of searching for skulls to be really boring and dry(about as fun as looking for a needle in a stack of needles), ill probably go back and try to find a few of them to see what they offer. I wont go into detail for what the skulls do, chances are if you are reading this, you know how to operate Google. As for multiplayer, its another shooter multiplayer. Sure, the equipment add a new dimension, but nothing really huge. The addition of "Forge", a somewhat "on the fly" map editor is being pushed as a HUGE feature, but i guess i don't see it as anything really earth shattering. Cool to be able to edit maps on a console, but not really anything that deep or different. It boils down to this. Halo deathmatch fans will continue to enjoy it, while casual players will probably skip it, seeing as how hardcore Halo MP players will just demolish those with no chops.

What? Did we?

Those points being said, it still doesn't bring up one of the biggest issues with the game. Anyone who consumes any sort of media knows that the big tagline for Halo 3 was "Finish The Fight". Understandable. The 3rd episode in a trilogy. Return of the Jedi. Matrix Revolutions. Indiana Jones and the Final Crusade. All movies where there is true finality and closure. Playing through the campaign and watching the final cutscenes(including the one waaay after the credits are over) leaves me with one final question.

What fight was finished? Were the flood really finished? Were the rings really put out of commission? Was the covenant really dealt with? There are no answers to these questions. While, from a business sense, i guess that works, from a story perspective, its pretty lame. There needs to be an end to the chapter other than the illusion that Master Chief is dead, even though he is floating towards a bright light on the other end of the galaxy. Im sure big huge franchises always want the ability to make sequels to make more money instead of truly finishing a story for the sake of a good story. I feel like this one, when the eventual Halo 4 is made....will feel like alien 3/4 in contrast to alien and aliens. Premise is good, but should have been left where it was. Add on top all the movies/commercials with the monument and diorama that was built. What the hell did that have to do with Halo 3? Nothing.

All in all, a mediocre shooter that should have been an epic shooter. A line from one of my favorite new shows, "Chuck".

"If a yawn could yawn, thats what this is."

Another One for the Books

So, it is done. Good solid game. It definitely has its faults; there's moments of slowdown, its graphics are great at times and other times it doesn't seem to have the same sheen as Kameo, and the camera can be a little troublesome in spots, but these are such small issues that they never really bothered me.

The gameplay is phenomenal. The platforming isn't cheap at all and the leveling of your weapons and your character as you play is properly tuned to where you never feel overpowered or underpowered at any time. Buying weapons and upgrades is really easy and the game is littered with secrets and little hidden areas. There's a TON to do here, enough so that you can literally call this a kitchen sink game meaning there's a lot of genres represented here and all of them fit in really well.

Plus, blowing the shit out of enemies feels really great. Really great. As an example, when you get the rocket launcher, it starts off as a really powerful weapon that just launches rockets into people's faces. As you level it up, it becomes more and more powerful and eventually, on contact, spews out napalm and kills surrounding smaller enemies or damages bigger ones. Beyond that, not only does it unleash a bunch of napalm on impact, it now launches 3 rockets that spews gobs of napalm on contact - each with the same destructive force as the first. It's beautiful. These little twists truly make the game a ton of fun.

If i had to give this puppy a score, it would probably be an 8.5 or a 9. Good stuff.

Non Emo Game Post

Since i realize alot of our posts/reviews have been negative so far, im going to post a bit of what im digging/what im looking forward to.

What im playing that i dig:

Ace Combat 6: See our review, it has its weaknesses, but man its still fun.
Team Fortress 2: Best multiplayer shooter out there. Period.
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts: Could be my favorite RTS of all time.
World in Conflict: Such a great RTS, Great story, incredible graphics, innovative design

What im looking forward to:

CoD 4 - Modern Warfare: Played the MP beta and the PC demo. Game is going to be incredible.
Mass Effect: At first i was lukewarm about this game, but the more im reading, more videos i see, im SUPER excited about this game.
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga: Never played them before. Have a hankering for a fun star wars game. Hopefully this will fill that void. Looks incredibly fun!
Unreal Tournament 3: Played the demo, looks very pretty and fun. I think i might wait for the Mac version, though.

What are you guys looking forward to?

Star Trek: Legacy

Man, i hate this so far. All of our posts, except the AC6 one have been mostly negative reviews. But i have to add another one to the pile.

I bought Star Trek Legacy when it came out last year but never finished it. The game is buggy, has terrible controls and some really bad graphics at some points. Lets dive into this a bit more detailed.

Gameplay: You would think a 3rd person combat game based in the trek universe would be a no brainer. Well...you would be wrong. Even with Bethesda producing it(Mad Doc Software did most of the legwork) the game was nearly impossible to get started. Bad targeting controls, even worse documentation on how to use sub system targeting as well as so many bugs and glitches sometimes you didnt know if the mission was even functioning properly.

Graphics: This is a hard one to rate. Looking at the ship models at the beginning, i would have given it a 9/10. However, once you get into ship damage, some space stations and other larger ships like the Borg cube...the graphic quality is so uneven its not even funny. Battle damage on your ship, which ironically was supposed to be a big selling point of the game, turns out looking like a glowing star. Borg cube explosions look so terrible with colliding pieces it makes you laugh. However, the ship models and lighting are spectacular. It just seems like they didnt go the extra mile.

Audio: Cant complain about getting all the captains from all trek series, including janeway. However, it sounds like they sat down and phoned in their parts. Especially Avery Brooks who plays Captain Sisko, it sounded like he was yawning while reading his lines....which i have to say were terrible. Dialogue and story was pretty lame. Sound effects were straight from the shows, but the music was cheap synthesized crap. In some parts, ship rumble was so loud, it almost muted out the dialogue.

Replayability: Blah. Noone plays online, near impossible to get a multiplayer game going. There are multiple difficulty levels, but im not sure how fun they would be fighting harder AI opponents while battling game glitches and bugs.

All in all, i give this game a 2/5. Bethesda really screwed the pooch and made a BAD trek game. It had so much potential, though.

Whatcha' Been Playin'? Weekend 11/02/07 - 11/04/07

This weekend I'll be delving into Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction, Naruto Rise of a Ninja, Ace Combat 6 coop love, and possibly some TF2. Impressions of Ratchet and Naruto to come on Monday and beyond. I'll see if I can get Mav off his lazy ass to update with his games though it's probably more tonsil-hockey than actual videogames... That sounds like a potential Wii game actually. I'll call EA tomorrow for the proposal.

BTW, It's Dumb.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/832/832195p2.html

Gears of War is coming to the PC with all kinds of new content absent from the 360 release. That's fine, remakes often do this. What you're also getting, in order to play these goodies online, is the requirement to subscribe to the Windows Live Gold service. A service identical to Xbox Live Gold with the caveat of being on the PC.

...

Xbox Live Gold is already pulling teeth. You essentially pay to use your own bandwidth and the bandwidth of other subscribers to play games. There are no dedicated servers. None. When you play a fighting game over XBL or a game of Call of Duty 4 next week, your connection will be based entirely on the host and your own connection while the game functions as sort of a pass-through to get you connected with one another. If end users could build dedicated servers out of Xbox machines, I'm sure they would, but the option isn't there just as it isn't for the PS3 - though that online matchmaking is free so it doesn't apply in this case.

On the PC, however, hosting a game with a dedicated server is not only a possibility, it's a necessity. Anyone who has played Team Fortress 2 can tell you that the game is BUTTER SMOOTH on the PC. There are games that go as high as 32 players on the PC because of dedicated servers while Xbox musters a meager 16 because of bandwidth restrictions. The same is true of Call of Duty 4 with 36 player servers versus the 18 on Xbox Live. However... there is one big exception other than player count between Xbox Live Gold and the PC environment:

When I connect to a game of TF2 on the PC, other than the purchase of the game and my own Internet bill, IT'S FREE. FREE. 0 Dollars. Nothing. Zip, Zilch, Nada.

On Xbox Live Gold, that same ability to connect to other people, without benefits, can cost up to 7.99/month and the same for Windows Live Gold.

What the hell is wrong with you Microsoft? Stop charging for stuff that's been free that you don't host. Enough is enough.

Is there one for lesbian kisses?

Well, it seems someone found them. Mass effect achievements. SPOILER ALERT. A lot of info on the plot in there, but some are pretty big. 100g Achievements. Dayum.

Mass Effect Achievements

Edit(Mav): There is one for lesbian kisses, rofl! "Paramour - Complete any romance subplot - 10G"

Edit(BW): Best 10 achievement points ever.

Battlestar Galactica - The Game!

I believe last week BSG hit XBLA. It's more or less a twin stick top down shooter. You fly around in space shooting cylons or colonial fighters depending on your preference. Shoot missiles, do more shooting. Yeah.

It sucks. Avoid it. Avoid it like the BSG producers avoid making the show. GG.

*mav* - what the crap, i actually bought the full version too. I guess i had more faith than i should have in sierra. Not every game is a World In Conflict.

I Hate Mainstream Game News Sites

It wasnt that long ago that Gamespot and IGN were good sources of news and game info. Is it just me or have they become just one big ad platform?

Most of the game news i get is via RSS anymore, so maybe im just somewhat desensitized to the ads out on the webternets, but anytime i actually go to gamespot or IGN, i get crazy frustrated thats its a flat table for which ads are shown to you. There is little news there that is any different from other sites, and the additional information they have on non-gaming topics, such as TV or Movies, all copycat posts too.

What do these guys add to the genre anymore?

Im not really sure. I guess im not ready to say that gaming blogs are the way to go. One thing mainstream sites like these get are exclusives with developers and production houses. Gaming blogs wont ever get those because they arent notable enough. However, im not sure we arent getting anything much from IGN doing some developer interview that a gaming house couldnt do on its own.

With the recent blitz of crap from the Halo 3 launch, i guess im getting kind of irked how when something goes mainstream, it becomes so produced. Game Fuel? What the hell is that about? I saw more PRODUCTS related to Halo 3 then actual copies of the game. When are ad companies going to realize...people dont react to advertising like they used to? Just today, going to IGN...there is a HUGE flash based ad for Kane and Lynch. Im guessing, using a made up statistic, that 95% of people who frequent IGN know about Kane & Lynch. Why advertise that? Seems to be like marketing beer to alcoholics.

What is my point? That is a valid question. I guess im trying to figure out how to keep the gaming news/info genre the way it always was. User driven. Blogging has helped, hence our creation of ISAG, but i guess the more mainstream and corporate some of these gaming sites get, the less i trust their opinion and see it more as a platform for a new mountain dew product rather than a true gaming review or true developer interview....hey...that sounds just like all other news outlets!

*sigh* Mainstream media ftl.

Achievement Whores: This is You

wut.

Go Dance With....i wont even finish that....

Mavrixx's take: Beat Ace Combat 6 last night for Xbox. Not only the first game i ever finished on the Xbox, but one of the most fun console games i ever played. The story is interesting, the graphics are incredible and the sound/music is amazing. The only downside is the dialogue sounds like a 10 year old wrote it. If i had to hear the phrase "dance with the angels" 1 more time, i was going to stab a kitten.

If you like combat flight sims and dont mind them being a bit "arcade-ish" (aka having over 400 missiles on your plane) give it a shot. This game should be a required test for any HDTV running at 1080p. Its beautiful.

Bloodwall's take: Indeed, the game is quite good, but it starts off a little slow. Hang in there for four or so missions and the game starts to really take off (pun unintentional). If you're new to the Ace series, you're definitely in for a treat with this title. It has everything Mav mentioned above. All you need is a little Kenny Loggins in the background and Anthony Edwards macking on the windshield and you have a real version of Top Gun where you're Tom Cruise.

Veterans to the series may feel a little tired of the formula, however. Though the dialog is atrocious, as has been in previous Ace games, nothing is really new here. The plane count is much lower, the story is contrived, and that four mission leeway becomes six if you're not careful which is almost half the game. There's definitely some cool moments later on and the music/graphics are quite good, but don't expect anything revolutionary. It's still fun, but it's still Ace Combat.
